DASH Study

The goal of this project is to examine predictors of cognitive impairment and reduced everyday function (e.g., lowered mobility) among African American and Caucasian older adults with type 2 diabetes in Alabama. This project focuses on a number of factors that have implications for prevention, including health literacy, health care access and utilization, stress, social support, and mental health. Multiple measures of cognition and health literacy are being administered in order to determine which measures are most appropriate for screening in terms of (a) identifying older adults with diabetes who are at greatest risk of cognitive and mobility decline, and (b) utility of measures across race and different levels of education and literacy.
